War is declared

August 4th 1914

Today one hundred years ago, Britain and the Commonwealth entered into one of the most horrific wars of the twentieth century, one of unimagined suffering and loss of life.

  They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England’s foam

  1. I’m sat here this evening feeling a little depressed about the events of the day.

    I think the UK as a whole, has got it wrong. As a nation we do the Remembrance thing quite well, it’s a well-rehearsed habit on these big anniversaries, but that’s not really what we should be doing today…

    What we should actually be remembering today are the reasons why it all started.

    I’m quite sure that instead of dimming lights etc as a mark of respect, those who lost their lives in the service of this country 100 years ago would prefer that we discussed the history, learnt the lessons and resolved never to make the same mistake again…
